How to Buy a Gun Online in Oregon
Oregon Arms & Ammunition ships rifles, shotguns, handguns and ammunition across Oregon. A firearm you order online is not sent to your home. It is sent to a licensed dealer you choose in Oregon, and that dealer completes the sale with you in person. This guide explains how that works, what Oregon law says about buying and carrying, and where to find answers to the questions buyers ask most.
How ordering online and pickup work
Step one is ordering here. Every firearm ships to the licensed dealer near you that you pick at checkout. Ammunition, optics and most parts ship straight to your door.
Step two is pickup at the dealer. When you arrive, show your photo ID and complete ATF Form 4473. The dealer then runs your background check through the Oregon State Police Firearms Instant Check System, which costs $10 and clears most buyers in minutes. The dealer hands over the firearm once the check comes back approved.
Dealers set their own handling fees for transferring a firearm. Ask the dealer you choose about any fee before you order, so there are no surprises at the counter.
Federal law sets the minimum age for the dealer sale at 18 for rifles and shotguns and 21 for handguns. Bring the photo ID the dealer asks for, and check their hours before you plan the trip.
What Oregon state rules say about buying
Oregon has no permit to purchase and no registration in force today. You buy with your photo ID, Form 4473 and the state background check at the dealer.
Oregon also requires a background check on private sales since 2015. Buyer and seller meet at a licensed dealer, and the dealer runs the check. Close family transfers and a few temporary loans are exempt.
Measure 114 would add a permit to purchase, but its start has been blocked or delayed by court action and legislation. Check current status with the Oregon State Police before you order, since this can change.
What Oregon state rules say about carrying
Open carry of an unloaded or loaded handgun is legal for adults in most of Oregon. ORS 166.173 lets a city or county ban loaded firearms in public places, and Portland and several other cities have done so. Check the local rules for the place you plan to go.
A concealed handgun license exempts you from those local rules. The license comes from the county sheriff, not the state. You must be 21, a resident of the county, pass a background check and show proof of a handgun safety course. Licenses run four years. Some public buildings have their own carry rules, so check before you go.
Where local rules differ
- Portland: one of the cities with a ban on loaded firearms in public places.
- Western Oregon: the region where the general rifle buck deer season runs, under Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife rules for 2026.
- Eastern Oregon: the region where buck hunting moved to controlled Deer Hunt Areas that you must draw.
- Northwest Permit Zone: goose hunting areas with extra permit rules for hunters.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to buy a gun in Oregon?
Not as of this writing. Measure 114 would require a permit to purchase, but it has been blocked or delayed, so check current status with the Oregon State Police. You buy with photo ID, Form 4473 and an Oregon State Police background check at the dealer near you.
Is there a waiting period in Oregon?
Oregon sets no fixed waiting period. Most checks come back in minutes, and the dealer hands the gun over once the state police issue an approval number. State police say a dealer may deliver after three business days if a check is still pending, though many dealers wait for the final answer.
Who issues a concealed handgun license?
The county sheriff issues it, not the state. You apply as a county resident, are fingerprinted, show proof of a handgun safety course and pass a background check. The license is good for four years.
How does a gun I order get to me?
We ship every firearm to the licensed dealer near you that you choose at checkout. That dealer runs the background check and hands the gun over. Ammunition, optics and most parts ship straight to your door.
Are private gun sales legal in Oregon?
Yes, but Oregon has required a background check on private transfers since 2015. Buyer and seller meet at a licensed dealer, who runs the check. Close family transfers and a few temporary loans are exempt.
