
This is a large and impressive Japanese katana signed “Nōshū Kawai Hisasada, made at the age of 78” with a date inscription of Bunkyū 3rd year, 11th month (November 1863). The smith proudly noted his advanced age, a rare and desirable feature in sword inscriptions. The blade measures 27.75 inches in length with exceptional proportions: a wide motohaba of 34.61mm and a stout motokasane of 8.37mm, giving the sword a very heavy and powerful feel. The shape is bold and substantial, typical of strong late Edo period construction. A dragon horimono is carved into the blade, adding dramatic visual appeal. The tang is ubu with a long, crisply cut signature and date. Mounted in unusual presentation koshirae, featuring an ornate lacquer saya decorated in gilt floral scrollwork, with matching brass fittings and ray skin hilt components.
